eggplant ethymology

My students from culinary arts in 1st B asked me today why an "aubergine" is also called "eggplant", since I don't know I asked them to search the web.

Galletas de Perlas de Chocolate


Here's the original Nestlé Toll House semi sweet morsels chocolate chip cookies recipe, according to pack instructions. You can always browse their web page it's worth visiting http://www.verybestbaking.com/products/tollhouse/

As you know I always try fixing recipes and adjust them to what I have in hand at home, this time, I have hardly made any changes. Here you go, I hope you like them, and remember they're at their best when straight from the oven, watch out!! don't get burnt, sweetie.

Ingredientes:
325gr. de harina floja
1 cucharadita (5ml.) de Royal
1 cucharadita (5ml.) de sal
220gr. de mantequilla en pomada
180gr. de azúcar blanca
150gr. de azúcar de caña
1 cucharadita (5ml.) de extracto de vainilla
2 huevos
350gr. de perlas de chocolate (al poder ser de la marca Nestlé y semi-dulces)
120gr. de nueces picadas

Elaboración:
Precalentar el horno a 190 grados centígrados. En un bol pequeño mezclar la harina, el Royal y la sal. Reservar. En un bol grande, mezclar la mantequilla, azúcares, y extracto de vainilla, batir hasta que la mezcla esté cremosa. Añadir los huevos y ligarlos con la mezcla anterior. Poco a poco ir añadiendo la harina reservada, las perlas de chocolate y finalmente las nueces picadas.
Colocar, con la ayuda de cucharas, bolas de la mezcla sobre la placa del horno previamente engrasada. Hornear a 190 grados alrededor de 10 minutos. Salen alrededor de 50 galletas de 5 centímetros.

Here, special for all of those who don't know what rhubarb looks like. This greengrocer's stall with Spanish onions, all sorts of potatoes, and some wonderful rhubarb stalks shows us those deep-pink kind-of-sticks that help the stall designer create vegetable frontiers among the different varieties of the kitchen-garden.
One springtime favourite recipe, for anyone who has tasted it, is rhubarb crumble.

"Ainhoa's maki-sushi ongi etorria"



One of my students from the Basque group, Ainhoa, prepared some maki-sushi and brought it to the classroom, we all had a bite, it was really nice, I have taken this image from wikipedia, visit the English version there's more information and pictures than in the Spanish one. This is my favourite dessert.

Many of my friends ask me for this recipe and in general most of my students love brownies, so we have good practice in recipe translation and culinary English. I give them the recipe in English after having a taste in the classroom.

This recipe is based on one I found in a Hersheys chocolate box, but I had to change it somewhat when trying to use it in the Basque Country, I couldn't find the ingredients mentioned so I adjusted it to what I could get hold of.

BROWNIES DE CHOCOLATE

INGREDIENTES:

250 gr. Mantequilla (no importa que sea algo menos)
250 gr. Valor de cobertura, el del envoltorio que imita a una caja de madera.
350 gr. Azúcar
4 huevos
220 gr. Harina
5 ml. Extracto de vainilla líquida
2 pizcas de sal
120 gr. Nueces picadas


ELABORACIÓN:

Calentar el horno a 180º C. Engrasar un molde rectangular e 30x20x5 cm. Aprox. con algo de la mantequilla. En un barreño/bowl apto para microondas colocar la mantequilla y el chocolate y meter en el micro a temperatura máxima durante un minuto o minuto y medio, o hasta que el chocolate funda y la mantequilla y el chocolate se mezclen bien al revolver con cuchara de madera. Añadir removiendo el azúcar. Añadir removiendo los huevos uno a uno batiendo con la cuchara hasta que la mezcla quede homogénea antes de echar el siguiente. Añadir removiendo la harina, la vainilla y la sal hasta que la mezcla quede homogénea. Si se desea, añadir las nueces picadas a la mezcla.

Extender la mezcla por igual en el molde ya preparado. Hornear entre veinte minutos y media hora, cuidando de que no queden secos, son más ricos jugosos.. Enfriar en el molde. Desmoldar y cortar en rectángulos. Salen aproximadamente tres docenas de brownies
